Cheap Family Vacations in Playa Del Carmen

The Winter is coming to an end, and Spring is just around the corner. With Spring Break coming up fast, many families are starting to look into cheap family vacations that they can take the whole troop on. Playa Del Carmen is a perfect locale for taking the whole family on some cheap vacations that they won’t soon forget. Here’s a few tips to make your family vacation to Playa all the more memorable:

Be sure not to miss one of the most popular and adored destinations in Playa Del Carmen: The Xcaret Show. The Xcaret show teaches you about the history of the Mayans from their popular ball court game to fire hockey to live dancing and music. Afterwards you can easily enjoy a day at the attached eco-park that is full of wild rides and beautiful scenery. Also Xel-Ha is a very popular eco park destination offering a variety of different attractions. Together, they are two of Playa’s “Must See” destinations.

If you are worried about tipping in Mexico on your family vacation, don’t be. It is customary to tip most everybody, but it’s also quite easy and cheap. If you are staying at a hotel just be sure to have plenty of 10 peso coins on hand or $1 bills. It’s customary to tip your maids and waiters, but be sure you put the coins/bills directly into their hands. If you leave it out, others (like their managers) may sneak in and take the change before the maid actually gets it. Usually 10 pesos is more than enough to tip a maid, and 10% is a good rule of thumb for tipping waiters.

In the past, Playa Del Carmen was a slow paced fishing village. Now, it is growing into a bigger and more popular tourist destination, although it is much calmer compared to Cancun. However, if you are looking for a real chilled out vibe, then we recommend visiting Tulum just to the South. Tulum is replete with ruins and beautiful vistas, cenotes and sleepy hammocks. If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of civilization while still enjoying the comforts of an all inclusive hotel, Tulum is a great place to take the family for holiday.

Don’t worry about money or getting money in Mexico. It’s as easy as hitting up the local ATM at a bank to pull pesos from your home bank account. There’s no need for cumbersome travelers checks or to change your money before you leave. Most stores and restaurants in Playa will accept the US dollar at a rate of 10:1 if you don’t want to withdraw some pesos from an ATM.
Most importantly: Enjoy your trip. Book your reservations well in advance, and come with an open mind. You will love your family vacation in Mexico and your kids will remember it for many years to come!
