El Alux Restaurant In A Cave
We just had to put up two posts in one day this week. We just returned from the most amazing restaurant and bar in all of Playa Del Carmen. One of the coolest features of this region of Mexico are the Mexican Cenotes, giant holes in the Earth, caves made of limestone that have been eaten away for thousands of years. The Mayans held Cenotes to be mystical entrances to the underworld.
Well today, we just discovered how true that is. The mystical entrance we discovered was the restaurant and bar called El Alux. Alux is a Mayan word for a spirit or sprite, and the restaurant of El Alux certainly holds an otherworldly appeal. Built into a series of caves within one of the famous cenotes, El Alux offers a completely unique dining experience.

You literally travel into the cenote, through twisting passages to get to this etheral location. Watch your head as the cave is still growing and changing, stalagtites and stalagmites hang from the ceilings and protrude from the floor. Beautiful rock formations are lit in unearthly colors, adding to the mystic of this restaurant. Shadowy passages lead to VIP rooms and sections, private corners lit in the colors of the underworld afford you a private retreat to contemplate the deeper things. (pun intended)

The food is top notch, even a bit magical to fit the atmosphere. Mouth watering steaks, flamed mangos, unique cocktails combining traditional ingredients from this part of Mexico are just part of the menu. The Playa del Carmen restaurant of El Alux is an unique experience that won’t soon be forgotten. Check it out!
